MacCrellish, William H., Jr., of Wellesley, Massachusetts passed away on August 7, 2013 at the age of 91. Bill practiced corporate and business law in Boston for close to 60 years. He was fiercely loyal and dedicated to his clients, whom he considered friends, and to his family. Bill is survived by his five children: Bruce of South Woodstock, VT; David of Sandwich, NH; Sarah of Bolton, MA; Stuart of New Haven, VT; and John of Siesta Key, FL; and his three cherished grandchildren: Megan MacCrellish Walton, Rider Cady MacCrellish, and Beau MacCrellish LeClaire. Bill was predeceased by two remarkable wives, Sheila (Moore) who died in 1995 after 43 years of marriage and Ann (Keleher) who died in 2011 after 12 years of marriage.
Bill was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 4, 1922, the oldest child of William H. MacCrellish and Florence St. John. He attended Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati and graduated in 1940. He entered Princeton University, his father’s alma mater, the following fall. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army in March of 1943, and he and other military personnel were ordered to report to Rutgers University to undergo intensive language training in French. The goal was to enable them to serve as advisors to the new French Government following the presumed liberation of France. Well prior to liberation, however, General de Gaulle informed the U.S. Government that no such advisors would be required. Instead, Bill was ordered to report to the 104th Infantry Division stationed at Camp Carson, Colorado. Attached to the Canadian Second Army in Holland, his division came under fire beginning in mid-October of 1944. Until meeting with Russian troops on the Elbe River in May of 1945, the 104th was in near continuous combat. Sergeant MacCrellish was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his services in the European Theater.
After the war, Bill returned to Princeton and graduated with honors in 1946 winning the thesis prize in the School of Politics and International Affairs. Following one year of service in Greece as an observer with the Allied Mission to Observe Greek Elections, Bill attended Harvard Law School. He began his legal career at Nutter, McClennen & Fish, but left in 1954 to start a new firm with General Ralph G. Boyd, a senior partner in the Business Department at Nutter. The new firm eventually operated under the name of “Boyd, MacCrellish & Wheeler” until 1993, at which time Bill and others rejoined Nutter. Planning to work only a couple more years, Bill stayed at Nutter for another fifteen years.
Bill served as an officer and Director of numerous corporations and foundations over the years including Shipley Company, Harvey Industries, Haynes Management Company, Pierce Aluminum Company, and the New England Aquarium among others. He was a devoted member of the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, and served as a Town Meeting member and a Library Trustee in Wellesley. Bill also was a long time member of the Longwood Cricket Club, Wellesley Country Club, Harvard Club of Boston, and Princeton Club of New York.
Bill was a voracious reader and collected books for most of his life. He took particular pleasure in passing along his books to friends and family members. He was pleased to gift his World War II collection to Walnut Hills High School in memory of his Walnut Hills’ classmate and Princeton roommate, Lieutenant Robert B. McCaslin, who was killed on June 6, 1944 in a bombing run over Romania.
A memorial service will be held at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington Street on Friday, August 16, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church or the Wellesley Community Center. Arrangements are under the direction of the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, Wellesley, MA.
