Messing, Gertrude Ann Walsh, of North Hill, Needham, formerly of Wellesley Hills, died on October 15, 2012 at the age of 89. Beloved wife of 65 years of Richard F. Messing, retired Senior Vice President of Arthur D. Little in Cambridge. Gertrude was an Executive Secretary at the same firm, where the couple met. Gertrude raised her six children in Wellesley Hills. She will be greatly missed by Mark and his wife Tina of Philadelphia, Jane and her husband Vincent Perla of Scottsdale, Robert and his wife Priscilla of Wellesley, Nancy and her husband Dr. Ely Brand of Ft. Lauderdale, David and his wife Diane of Chicago, and William and his wife Tina of Seattle. She was the cherished grandmother of 11 and great grandmother of 1. Gertrude was the daughter of Mary Alice Flaherty and James H. Walsh, reporter for the Boston Record and later General Manager of the Boston Chamber of Commerce. She was the third of the six Walsh sisters, who were raised in Brookline and West Roxbury. Gertrude attended Edward Devotion School, Notre Dame Academy, where she was Class President, and Chamberlayne College. Gertrude was a beloved aunt to the many Walsh cousins, who meet annually to renew family ties. Gertrude inherited her artistic ability from her father, a notable painter of Irish landscapes, and her uncle, James Charles Flaherty, an architect and watercolorist who specialized in Boston scenes. She drew and painted portraits and landscapes throughout her life. Her love of flowers was evident in her work, as well as in her participation in the House and Garden Club of Wellesley where she held positions including Secretary and President. One of her proudest accomplishments was helping to oversee the planning and landscaping of Central Square in Wellesley, in front of the Main Post Office. She was a member of the Landscape Critics Council as well. Gertrude’s many writings, sketches and memoirs will be cherished by her family. A lifelong music lover, she enjoyed playing the piano and, earlier, the saxophone. YOST Edward “Eddie” Frederick Joseph, of Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts, passed away of natural causes on October 16th, 2012 in Weston, Massachusetts. He was 86. The son of Mary (Maass) and Frederick Yost, Eddie was born on October 13th, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York and raised in South Ozone Park in Queens. After graduating from John Adams High School, he furthered his education by earning both a Bachelor Degree of Education and Master Degree of Physical Education from New York University. While working on his education, Eddie was drafted by Major League Baseball’s Washington Senators in 1944 at the age of 17. Nicknamed “The Walking Man” because of his uncanny ability to draw a base on balls, Eddie went on to play a stellar 18 years in the Major Leagues for not only the Senators, but also the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels. In 1946, he took a hiatus from baseball to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy. His time with the Detroit organization was special as it was here that he met his beloved wife of 45 years, Patricia Healy . Married in Florida, the young couple eventually settled in Hauppauge, New York where they raised their three children, Felita, Michael and Alexis. After his playing days, Eddie enjoyed another 22 years in the Major Leagues, coaching third base for the Washington Senators, New York Mets and finally, the Boston Red Sox. After a total of 40 years with Major League Baseball, Eddie retired in Boston in 1984 at the age of 58. Understandably, he and Pat grew to love the quaint New England area and so they remained, calling Wellesley Hills their final home. Although family, friends and baseball were Eddie’s true passions, his retirement years afforded him more time to devote to his hobbies, restoring antique carousel horses and clocks. And while he was always on the go, taking daily walks around Wellesley and maintaining his home, he still found time to solve a good Jumble and crossword puzzle or challenge Jeopardy contestants from the comforts of his favorite chair. Eddie was predeceased by his wife Patricia Healy Yost, brother Alfred Yost and sister Muriel O’Connor. He was survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Felita Yost Carr and Brian Carr of Hollis NH, son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teresa Yost of Huntington Beach, CA, daughter Alexis Yost Fougere of Wellesley, MA , grandsons Edward and Joseph Yost of Huntington Beach, CA, Sister Rosemary Huebner of Scottsdale AZ , devoted family friends Alexei and Natalya Komarov of Natick, MA and many other family members, friends and fans. A private memorial service service will be held at the family’s cemetery plot in Wellesley. As a thank you to his devoted cardiologist, Dr. Kimberly Parks, in lieu of flowers, please send a donation in memory of Eddie Yost to the Mass General Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) Program Research Fund. Checks can be mailed to the Mass General Development Office, 165 Cambridge Street, Ste 600, Boston, MA 02114.

NATICK: Alice (Parmenter) Schaefer, a lifelong resident of Natick, died early Tuesday morning, November 27, 2012. She had celebrated her 100th birthday on October 16th. Born, raised and educated in Natick, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Una Rae (Weldon) Parmenter. She graduated from Natick High School at age 16 and then worked for several years at the Natick Federal Bank. Alice married in 1936 and concentrated on making a home for her family. During the war she began work with James Gregg at his insurance company. Earning her broker’s license, Alice worked with Mr. Gregg until his death. She made a bid to assume the business, but at the time, it was thought that a business loan entrusted to a woman was a bad idea. Undaunted, Alice went straight up the road to Wellesley and became employed with Corcoran Havlin Insurance in Wellesley. Seeing what an asset she was, the company opened a branch in Natick and placed Alice as its head. She soon had a multitude of clients, many of whom had known and trusted her from her days with James Gregg. Continuing to work until age 80, Alice had by then become a computer enthusiast, a proclivity she never lost. She continued to read the New York Times daily and mastered their crossword puzzles with regularity. In 1997, she became a “snowbird,” staying several months each year with family in Clearwater, FL. Of her active years in Natick, it can be said that Alice loved her community, was always ready to quietly help those in need. Civic minded, she tirelessly worked the polls year after year. Her family is very proud of her accomplishments and will miss this bright, loving, and gracious lady. She is survived by a son, Gerard F. Schaefer of Northampton, a daughter, Ann K. Brown and her husband Bob of Natick; three grandchildren, Robert Brown of FL, Kathy Lentini and her husband Michael of Natick, and John Brown of Bellingham; and five great-grandchildren, Joshua, Shaun, Briana, Shane, and Derek.
